In this section of our nature photography website I will briefly review a number of photography books that have been instrumental in helping me grow as a nature photographer.

Photography Books by Freeman Patterson

Photography and the Art of Seeing: A Visual Perception Workshop for Film and Digital Photography: In this edition you will learn about the principles of composition and visual design.

You will also learn techniques and exercises that will help you break away from the traditional concepts and become aware of the barriers to seeing and learn how to observe, imagine and express yourself in a more creative way.

It is a book you will easily read a 2nd and 3rd time as your skills develop over time.

Photography for the Joy of It: An Introductory Workshop for Film and Digital Photography: This is one of Freeman’s 1st books on photography basics and has been completely updated and revised for digital photographers. It has now been updated to include technical guidelines adapted for both digital and film photographers.

This book reviews the basics of photography, provides clear instruction for beginning colour or black-and-white photographers on issues such as selecting equipment, determining the correct exposure, and understanding depth of field.

Photographers learn how to make pictures with selective focus, showing motion, using flash, double or long exposures, and at night. For many of the photographs presented in this book the captions include valuable technical information and personal commentary that you will no doubt find quite useful.

Photographing the World Around You: A Visual Design Workshop for Film and Digital Photography: This book provides valuable information on the essential building blocks of visual design, including light, shape, line and perspective.

There are clear and concise instruction on how to use this foundation to create balance, proportion and rhythm in photographs. You will also read about his week-long workshops on photography and visual design and get a real as to the value of these workshops.

Photography of Natural Things: A Nature and Environment Workshop for Film and Digital Photography: Here you will learn the techniques of photographing nature and how to photograph a full spectrum of natural subjects and to explore their relationship to the natural world to create fine images of their own.
